Our school is committed to a consistent, evidence-based whole school approach to the teaching of Literacy. This approach ensures that all students receive high-quality instruction aligned with the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) outcomes, and that teachers are supported through clear, consistent planning tools and pedagogical strategies.

This whole school approach includes the development of a Literacy Scope and Sequence, guiding staff in:

Key Focus Areas in Literacy Development:

• Phonemic Awareness – the ability to hear and manipulate individual sounds in spoken words
• Phonics – understanding the relationship between letters and sounds
• Vocabulary – knowing and using a range of words for effective communication
• Fluency – reading with accuracy, speed, and expression
• Comprehension – understanding text at literal, inferential, and critical levels
